We have being learning about the technology back when only the Maoris were in New Zealand. The technology was about the whare, clothes, weapons and kai.
Technology is about having a problem and someone fixing it .The old whare had a problem because they didn't have glass and doors and so someone invented glass windows so they have fixed the problem. The materials used for the old whare were, dirt ,wood and many other things then someone invented concrete.
The Technology of Weapons and Hunting.
Weapons like swords and those fancy bow and arrows, they didn't have all those. It was was a string attached to a stick and some sharp stone, a straight stick and some feathers. For axes, a string to help attach the stone and wood. For a fishing rod it was just a line, a stick and a bait.
Weaving
The early Maori made baskets, baby beds and fishing nets out of harakeke . You have to say a prayer to Tane Mahuta the god of the forest about what you are using the harakeke it is respectful before you cut it out of the plant. Then we were talking about which harakeke leaves we shouldn’t cut because the ones in the middle need to grow and they are the kids and there's the other ones protecting them and you can't cut those ones to. It's the ones hanging down on the side leaning. If you only need a little piece you cut the whole blade because it won’t grow back anyway.
We made our own weave but with paper and paper strips. It was teaching us what it's like to actually weave with actual harakeke. All it was was over under over under then under then over under over under.
I found it really easy to make the weaving there were no challenges because all I had to do was listen really well. I had fun weaving and learning with Whaea Toni she is really good at teaching maori.
